A journey of a thousand recipes begins with a single dish
Hi Listeners!
Welcome back to Gastrophile's Journey.
Here, I share not just food — but memories made from moments. Today, I’m telling you the story of the very first dish I ever made in my life, for someone truly special🤗.
Let’s discover what that dish was ❓— and who that favorite person is❔
From Zero to Sweet Beginnings
Back then, I didn’t even know how to make a simple cup of tea or coffee☕. I was a complete beginner in the kitchen. But something sparked inside me — I wanted to cook something from scratch.
Why? Because I wanted to gift it to someone I admired deeply. I chose my favorite sweet: Palkova — a traditional Indian milk-based dessert. And the person I made it for? My favorite teacher🥰.
She was my class teacher and also taught Maths — kind, graceful, and brilliant. She changed my view from “Ugh, maths is hard!😧” to “Wow! I love maths!”
Why Palkova, Why Her?
I made this dish in February 2020🗓️ — a month I’ll always remember. She was about to retire, and I wanted to give her something meaningful. I didn’t know her exact favorites, but I knew she had a sweet tooth.
So I decided to make palkova — my sweet for the sweetest teacher.
Kitchen Trials and Tiny Triumphs
I watched a few videos and followed the steps. Of course, I made a few mistakes: I delayed adding sugar, so the palkova started to stick and burn a little. I had to turn off the flame🔥 before the sugar melted completely.
Still, I poured it into a bowl and asked my family to try it. They said: “We loved it!”
My Honest First Taste Test
- Taste: Just like the palkova from sweet shops😋
- Texture: A bit sticky
- Appearance: Slightly burnt but still lovely
But most importantly, it was made with heart.
( I will share this palkova recipe in next bite)
The Moment That Melted My Heart
I usually reached school around 9:00 a.m. I didn’t want to give it in front of the class — I felt shy😳.
My classmate, who walks to school with me, encouraged me:
“Come, let’s go to the staff room and give it to her before class.”
So we went. I gave the bowl to my teacher. She smiled and said:
“Thank you! I love palkova!”
She tasted it right there and said:
“Wow! It tastes really good!✅”
She even shared some with us.
She looked at me and asked:
“Is this all for me?”
I replied: “Yes, miss.”
Then she asked, surprised:
“Do you know how to cook?”
I said: “No, miss. This is my first time. I tried it for you.”
Her smile in that moment — I’ll never forget it. She was truly happy. And so was I.
Where It All Began
Without knowing, without experience — I began my cooking journey. With one simple dish, made with love.
And that’s how it all started🏁.
I believe it's a good example of how food connects us deeply with people and memories ☺️
See you👋 in the next bite!
